03.17Adding Custom Emoticons To MSN Messenger
For those of you that aren’t real sure what an emoticon is exactly you can read all about them on Wikipedia. If you already know what I’m talking about then lets get started on adding custom emoticons to your MSN Messenger.
By default MSN ships there messenger with a bunch of cute little smiley faces to help you convey yourself during an instant message. But what if they don’t have the exact one you are looking for? Lucky for you MSN gives you a way to add custom emoticons. Follow the steps listed below and you should have your new emoticons added to your IM life in no time.

Yawning
- Right Click and save the yawning icon above
- Open A chat window with anybody from your contacts list.
- Click on the “smiley” emoticon right above the window you type in to send messages.
- Now click on the “More” or “Show All” link.
- Click the “Create” button.
- Now click “Find Image” browse to the yawning image you saved earlier (or any other image you want to use) and enter the remaining fields
That’s it! Anytime you want to use your new custom emoticon just use the shortcut you entered and enjoy.

Good tip. I think you should add a little info about the strict limitations that MSN has for emoticons.
Your sample yawn is a classic 19×19 pixel image, but creating bigger smileys is a bit harder. Bigger images need to be 50×50 pixels in size and they have to be animated gif files, even if they are static images.
I coded a web app to automatically animate/convert/resize pics to MSN specifications. You can check it out at http://www.emoticonize.com
